The 5th Chapter of Daniel: Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar's son and the new king, has not learned the lesson that made Nebuchadnezzar a success - have a humble heart before the one true God. Perhaps he can act the king in front of his subjects but, before God, he must be humble. Mene means God has weighed (numbered) Belshazzar's days and they are done, Tekel means Belshazzar has failed to be a worthy ruler and Peres ("Uparsin" means "and Parsin" and "Peres" is the singular form of "Parsin") means the kingdom will be divided between the Medes and the Persians. This is the lesson of the book of Daniel; be humble before God and don't rely on conventional wisdom, e.g. the Chaldeans. Note: Daniel must have been about 90 years old at this point and was essential called out of retirement at the suggestion of the Queen but it was too late, Belshazzar didn't make it through the night.
