Peter Declares That Jesus is the Messiah

In studying Mark 8, we discussed the disciples learning that Jesus was the Christ (aka the Messiah Note: The Greek translation of Messiah is Khristós (Χριστός) which was later anglicized as Christ.) and what that meant. This exchange is mentioned In Luke 9:18-20, Matthew 16, and Mark 8 but only in Matthew does Peter answer “You are the Messiah the Son of the living God.” In the others he says only that Jesus is the Messiah which doesn’t necessarily mean his is the son of God.

It isn’t clear that, though He acknowledged being the Messiah, that the disciples understood that he was the son of God. In spite of the version in Matthew 16, later in Matthew (26:69-75) Peter denies Jesus three times. It is, therefore, hard to believe that they really understood that Jesus was the son of God.

This exchange is not mentioned in John. In John 14:8; however,  Philip said, “Show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” To which Jesus said “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘show us the Father?’”

It is possible that until the resurrection the disciples really didn’t believe that Jesus was in fact the son of God.
