CHRIST BEFORE PILATE

We discussed the timing of Christ's ministry and felt that if the Romans weren't in control of Israel, the Priests would have killed Christ much earlier so, in a way (and they surely didn't mean to), the Roman's presence protected Christ for a time from the Priests. Pilate, for whatever reason (political or being impressed with Christ), did not want to crucify Christ. The Priests had been saying for some time that Christ was preaching against Roman rule but in John 18:36 Jesus sets the record straight and says to Pilate, "My kingdom is not of this world." Some of our group felt the Romans were as guilty as the Jews; others felt the Romans were just a tool of the Priests. It could also be said that we were all responsible for the need for Christ's sacrifice because of our sins.
