The Pharisees added their own rules and ideas to worship and resisted the basic truth that Jesus revealed and now, over 2000 years later, we still face the same danger of our faith being corrupted. It is easy for people to be carried away and misguided by artful speakers; the most outstanding example is Jim Jones and his People's Temple. He was charismatic and attracted over 900 men, women, and children which he poisoned to death with cyanide-laced Kool-Aid in 1978. Jesus warned of this danger in Matthew 7:15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." or 2 Peter 2:1 "But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies..." or perhaps one that fits current times: 2 Timothy 4:3 "For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.
