In Matthew 19 we read about a rich young man essentially telling Christ he had done everything right and wondered what other good thing he needed to do to have eternal life. Jesus said he needed to sell all he had and give it to the poor but the lesson is clear that even that wouldn't make him good; only God is good. The message we took from the exchange told us that you can't earn eternal life, it is a gift.
