We studied the conspiracy of the High Priest, Caiaphas, to kill Christ. It is more than shocking to learn about the Jew's religious leaders, Chief Priests and Elders, coming together as a committee to discuss murder, and in later verses bribery, as a tool to retain their power. You can understand that they were afraid to lose their authority, which they viewed as important for the good of the Jewish people, but a group discussion about murder calls their religion into question.
