The Book of Matthew was written for Jews; the Books of Luke and Mark were written for gentiles and perhaps Christian Jews. The Book of John seems also to have been for a mixed audience; Jewish and Gentile Christians. The Book of John confirms Jewish scripture and welcomes Gentiles into the Christian faith. We read about the cruxifixction in Matthew 27 and noted how only John was present; the other deciples, perhaps seeing that Jesus was captured and would be killed, must have at least temporarily lost faith and gone into hiding.
