OBEY THE AUTHORITIES

Through the miracle of the internet, the Wednesday CBMC group met again this morning. We discussed 1Peter 2:13-18. It is very timely as it advocates obedience to government authority. While the message is clear, we agreed that we should obey government only as long as it doesn’t require us to disobey the rules of behavior given us by Jesus. While it is more difficult to know when to disobey directions that harm you personally - redistribution of your earnings, seizing your property, or even forceably relocating you and your children (as has been done in history) - we must always be respectful in our resistance. A Christian can argue that the behavior of some politicians is not in the interest of the people, a Christian has to be careful to avoid personal attacks. Given some of the candidates now running for office, it is going to require that we be very careful in our comments so we don’t bring shame on the Christian religion by our conduct (Matthew 15:18).

Given that all things work for good for those that love the Lord (Romans 8:28), we discussed what good might come from the pandemic and decided that, among other things, it has made us appreciate our religious freedom and strive, all over the world, to communicate with other Christians - it has intensified the faith of believers.
