The Pharisees essentially dare Jesus to heal on the Sabbath and Jesus, aware of their hard hearts and duplicity, asks “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or kill? Then he proceeds to heal a man. The Pharisees are now driven to seek Jesus’ life. We ask ourselves why they would become so unhinged and some felt they were outraged at his breaking the law while others of us felt they were desperately afraid of losing their personal authority and highly regarded positions. Some of the Pharisees must also have convinced themselves they were doing the right thing. Lots of unkindness and even evil has been done by the self righteous.
