When leaving Bethany, Jesus cursed a fig tree because it doesn’t yield fruit. This recalls Jesus observing that a tree that doesn’t produce, a person that doesn’t produce, (Matthew 7), will not see heaven, they will wither and die. Perhaps the fig tree is a symbol of the Jewish people or their religious leaders with whom Jesus had to have been becoming disappointed.
The Priests wanted to kill Jesus because he was telling the people the truth rather than what the scribes, the teachers of the law, and the Priests wanted them to hear - nothing changes, Joseph Goebbels in Germany, and even today the media has it’s own message. Christians have to see past the misinformation and follow the scriptures.
