When Jesus told the rich man that, in addition to all the steps he had taken, he needed to sell everything he had and give it to the poor; even the disciples said, "Who then can be saved?” Meaning that no one is likely to do that. The disciples themselves, while they had stopped working to follow Jesus, still had their homes. Many of us felt that what Jesus was saying is, you can’t get to heaven by works alone, no matter how good they are and, even if you could, few followers, if any, would do all what was necessary. In summary, you can’t get to heaven by deeds alone, you need faith, but for anything you do give up for Jesus and the gospel, you will be rewarded many times over.
