We finished John 3 and had to marvel at the importance of this chapter; not just 3:16 which tells you in one sentence how to be saved, but also, as was pointed out by Stan Ogden, it is a "must read" chapter of the Bible because of John 3:7 - Sinners must be born again which leads us to an understanding of spirit vs. physical and John 3:14 - The Son of Man must be lifted up which foretells the future and John 3:30 - Jesus must increase while John the Baptist must decline which is John the Baptist's testimony about Jesus. That is a great deal of information for one chapter.
We also discussed the priests of the time and the morality that would allow groups of priests to plot murder too, as was said in a recent dramatization of the Bible, "maintain their monopoly on piety." Which led to a discussion about more modern religious groups/churches and their tendency to make up their own rules - perhaps as a method of exercising control over their parishioners. All this reminds us not to drink the cool-aid; believe the Bible.
