We reviewed John 4 and talked about the faith of the Samaritans, who were jews looked down upon by the Jews of Jerusalem, but readily accepted Christ while the priests of Jerusalem rejected Christ because of their training and position. As I heard someone once say, “The priests rejected Jesus because he was going to ruin their monopoly on piety.” Matthew 18:3 reads, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” A good demonstration of being too sophisticated to accept Christ is Nicodemus and his evening talk with Christ. He was drawn to Christ but had a difficult time attaining child-like faith given the decades of training and indoctrination he had. NOTE: In spite of Nicodemus' handicaps he assisted Joseph of Arimathea by providing the embalming spices and helping with the burial of Christ. This had to cost him standing with his peers and yet he found the faith to do it.
