We studied John 6:22-29 and focused on 6:28 and 29: “Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’” “Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.’”
This gave rise to a discussion of James 2:14 “What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds.” Yet, the Bible is clear that you can’t earn your way into heaven with deeds only, otherwise, what did Jesus die for? Our group felt that James was making the case that if you believe (have faith), you will demonstrate it by doing good deeds. How can you watch someone struggle and do nothing to help if you are a Christian?
