Jesus is the vine and we believers are the branches. The evidence of our faith as shown by our thoughts and deeds is the fruit we bare; this faith will not flourish unless we stay attached to Christ. God prunes us by the remorse we feel when we sin and by our ability to sustain our faith even when bad things happen to us.
