We discussed many false profits of the recent past like Jones and the 900 people who committed suicide at his direction. In any religious movement of even in an established church, deifying the leader in addition to or rather than Jesus is a sure warning sign. Perhaps these organizations are made possible by lazy followers; followers who haven’t taken time to study the word and are; therefore, easy to lead astray as the false profits invent their own seductive rules.
We talked about the difficulty of understanding what is really going on today given the introduction (by those interested in altering our perceptions) of Politically Correct speech. For example, the words FAIR and TRANSPARENT no longer have any useful meaning.
We spent time on verse 20: If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. Our group thought that many incorrectly think this verse means you can lose your gift of salvation but it really means that those who know about the Lord my not necessarily be saved and can be worse off for having known about the Lord but not accepted him.
