The group met this morning via Zoom and reviewed 2 Peter 3 which led to a lot of discussion about current events. We were reminded of the lady who recently, when told things are falling apart, responded with, “No, things are falling into place.” In support of this view, Chuck Kimmey (who joined us today from Arizona) suggested we read Harbinger by Rabbi Jonathan Cahn. I am of the opinion that nothing changes; cave men intimidated each other with pointed sticks, modern man uses pointed missiles; I don’t see a difference in attitude or approach.
We talked about how to respond to scoffers when we are trying to spread the word and were reminded of what the mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) said, "Even under the assumption that God's existence is unlikely, the potential benefits of believing are so vast as to make betting on theism rational." In other words, if those of us who believe are wrong, no loss; if those who don't believe are wrong, you sure don't want to be them.
We finished with a discussion on how to move from being a believer to being a disciple. No formula or procedure was developed. Bartt Stevens challenged all of us to find something positive about these tumultuous times to share at the next meeting.
Next Wednesday we start on Mark.
