POSSESSION and the SELECTION OF THE APPOSTLES

We continued studying Mark and spent considerable time discussing possession. Can you recognize someone who is possessed? Are they sitting next to you in church? It is interesting that the people of Jesus’ time knew about possession; they recognized that an evil spirit had been exorcised (Mark 1:27) and there were apparently many people who where known to have evil spirits (Mark 1:32-34).

We also talked about Andrew and Peter walking away from their work without a second thought when Jesus ask them to follow him. We wondered how someone could just leave their livelihood, especially in those days, but Mike Witzig reminded us that Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was a disciple of John the Baptist (John 1:40) who had described Jesus as the Lamb of God. Andrew, having heard that description followed Jesus from a meeting and spent the day with him. Andrew had told Peter that Jesus was the Messiah so when Jesus said, “follow me,” Peter and Andrew jumped at it.
