We continued to study Hebrews to help us understand the perspective of a Jewish convert to Christianity.
Verse 10:22 tells the Jews to draw near to God and that their hearts have been sprinkled to cleanse them. This suggests that they need not go to God through a Priest but can now speak to him directly. The “sprinkling” is in reference to the blood sacrifices of animals that the Jews made before Christ made the final sacrifice of his blood. All these references put things in context for the Jew.
Verse 10:26 “If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,” always worried me but Bartt Stevens pointed out that it didn’t say “believers” it referred instead to those who “received the knowledge” and didn’t believe.
We also talked about the word hope. Hope as a verb means you want something to be true but as a transitive verb could mean you have an expectation of fulfillment. Hope as a noun means you believe it will happen and expect fulfillment. For Christians it is a noun, not a verb.
