It would seem that Jesus’ brothers (James, Joseph, Simon and Judas) not only had no faith in Jesus, but they may have even disliked him; they mockingly urged him to go to Judea even though the Priests there wanted to kill him. This is puzzling as they had to have seen him do miraculous things as a young man given that during the first miracle in John, turning water into wine, it was clear that his mother knew he could do it; she was in fact very blasé about it. He, therefore, must have done miracles in the past. The only explanation for their lack of faith is, John 4:44 “For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his hometown.”
While this is interesting, the important messages in this chapter is 7:24, “Stop judging by appearances.”
