Today we studied John 8 wherein the Priests were challenging Jesus. We wondered a bit about verse 8:53, the Priest’s rhetorical question to Jesus, “Who do you think you are?” because other translations of 8:53 read, “Who do you make yourself out to be?” While the first translation suggests they are saying Jesus thinks he is the Christ, the second could be interpreted as their having said, who are you pretending to be. In either case it was rhetorical and not meant as a question but rather as an observation to make their point that Jesus was not the Son of God.
