To help understand the miracle of Lazarus we revisited John 9 and Jesus healing a man born blind. When he did that the disciples asked "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus said, "Neither... this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him."
Some of us wondered why a man had to suffer all those years to make a point or why Lazarus had to die to facilitate a miracle. Our ultimate view was that we can't know what God's plan is and, as it says in I Corinthians 4:5, "Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time,..." When you consider the plight of those born with infirmities, it could be said that it is a test of faith, both for the child and the parents. No matter what happens in your life, you have to keep your faith. Consider also that you will live for eternity and whatever happened in your life will eventually only have been for the blink of an eye.
The disciples warned Jesus that it was dangerous for him to go to Judea and Jesus responded in verse 11:9, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight; Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, ..."
While there was much discussion in our group about what this meant, one possibility is that since he is the light of world they couldn't and needn't delay going to Judea.
